The group flight arrives into Nairobi this morning and will be met and transferred to the start hotel. Land Only clients should also aim to arrive at the hotel this morning. From the hotel, we transfer to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage where we can meet the calves being rehabilitated. These elephants were rescued when they lost their mothers and so are being raised at the orphanage until they can be released back into the wild. To date the wildlife trust has successfully hand-raised over 150 infant elephants. We continue onto the Giraffe Centre, another of Nairobi’s conservation projects. At the centre it is possible to feed the giraffe from an elevated platform and learn more about the work that they do. The rest of the day is free to relax. *Panafric **Hotel or similar*
After breakfast at the hotel, we drive northwest to the edge of the Great Rift Valley to take in some spectacular scenery before descending into the valley and onto Lake Naivasha. Surrounded by grassy banks and dotted with floating reed islands, the lake is home to a healthy population of hippos and tremendous variety of birds. This afternoon we enjoy a cruise on the lake in search of hippos. If we’re lucky we should also see giraffe and antelope grazing on the shores of the lake. *Crescent Camp or similar*
Today is a free day to relax or enjoy the optional activities on offer in and around the lake. Possible activities include an excursion to the Crater Lake Game Sanctuary or a daytrip to Lake Nakuru, one of the best places in Africa to see rhino. *Crescent Camp or similar*
This morning we journey south to the Masai Mara National Reserve. The drive takes approximately 6 hours but we have regular stops along the way. The Masai Mara is one of the most famous ecosystems in the world and with good reason. This huge expanse of grassland is home to an astonishing variety of wildlife such as elephant, buffalo, zebra, crocodile, ostrich, hyena, rhino, cheetah, leopard and lion. Between mid-August to late October one of the greatest spectacles on Earth takes place in the Masai Mara – the annual wildebeest migration. Over one million wildebeest are joined by zebra and gazelle as they move into the reserve seeking fresh grazing. Nothing is guaranteed on safari, but with the help of our brilliant guides you should see and learn a huge amount about the resident wildlife as we game drive through the park this afternoon. *Mara Springs Camp or similar*
Rising early this morning we embark on a full day game drive in the Masai Mara National Reserve. During the course of the day we have a good chance of seeing a multitude of wildlife as we explore the Mara’s vast open plains. There is also the opportunity to do an optional hot air balloon safari in time for sunrise – this is an especially memorable experience during the wildebeest migration as it is only from this vantage point that you can truly appreciate the scale of this natural wonder. *Mara Springs Camp or similar*
There is one last chance to go into the reserve for an optional morning game drive before we say goodbye to the Masai Mara and return to the bustling metropolis of Nairobi. This is another 6 hour drive but we should arrive at our hotel with plenty of time to relax, freshen-up and enjoy the hotel’s facilities. This evening we can enjoy our final dinner together at one of Nairobi’s restaurants. *Panafric Hotel or similar*
Our trip ends this morning. Those on the group flights will be taken to airport for the flight to London.

This trip has been graded 3 (Moderate) for children aged 9-12 years old.
Although the itinerary has been designed with 9-12 year olds in mind, it is
also suitable for 13-16 year olds.
Transport is typically in a specialist overland vehicle with good visibility
and 4WD vehicles in the Masai Mara. There will be some early mornings and two
long drives of approximately 6hrs (to and from the Masai Mara). Although the
distances covered are not particularly long, some of the roads are poor which
adds to the journey times. However, the scenery, wildlife and chance to see
more of Kenyan life make the journeys enjoyable. We include breaks for toilet
facilities, shopping, photos and meals and there is also a reference library
on board the vehicle.
The game drive in the Masai Mara on Day 5 will involve waking up before
sunrise and spending a full day in a 4WD vehicle. As this is within a
national park with dangerous animals roaming, opportunities for toilet breaks
are limited. The Masai Mara is one of the best destinations in the world for
seeing wildlife but there can never be any guarantees when it comes to seeing
animals in the wild – therefore, there is the possibility of not much
happening for parts of the day while our guides search for our next viewing.
We use hotels in Nairobi and permanent tented camps in Naivasha and the Masai
Mara. The permanent tents are spacious with beds and en suite bathrooms. The
accommodation in Nairobi and Naivasha have swimming pools.
Hotels & Permanent Tented Camps
On these departures we spend 2 nights in hotels and 4 nights in permanent
tented camps.
All the accommodation is en suite and relatively comfortable, though not
luxurious. We have selected, whenever possible, properties in or near the
national parks we visit to enrich the wilderness experience of this trip.
The permanent tented camps that we use are at well-equipped resorts with
spacious, walk-in tents with beds and furniture. Most of these resorts have
additional facilities such as a swimming pool, bar and sometimes WiFi.
Single supplement is available.
All breakfasts , 4 lunches and 4 dinners included.

Transport is in one of Exodus' specialist overland vehicles. The vehicle
seats 24 passengers but there is a maximum of 20 passengers on this
itinerary. The seating is mostly forward facing and the windows are large and
easy to open. The vehicle carries all camping equipment and has a large
drinking water tank for you to fill up a smaller bottle. There is a reference
library on the truck and also a 6-plug 240 volt invertor that can recharge
camera/cellphone/laptop batteries when it is being driven. For game viewing
in the Masai Mara we use smaller 4WD vehicles.
*Travelling flight inclusive from London: 8 days*
The group flight from London is an overnight flight departing the day before
Day 1 of the itinerary.
*Flights from London*
We normally use the scheduled services of Ethiopian Airlines or Qatar Airways
(depending on availability). As flight timings and schedules change regularly
we recommend you call one of our specialist sales staff or your agent to
confirm up‐to‐date timings. Please note timings may change at a later
date and cannot be confirmed until approximately two weeks before departure.
*Travelling land only: 7 days starting and ending in Nairobi*
Your trip normally starts at our accommodation in Nairobi in the morning of
Day 1 of the itinerary. Details of how to reach the start point are provided
in the Final Joining Instructions ‐ sent approximately two weeks before
departure.
Airport transfers are included for those on the group flights. Please note
that transfers are not included for clients arriving on any other flight,
even if Exodus has booked it.
If you require airport transfers, you may (by prior arrangement only) be
able to join the group transfer. Transfers are arranged to coincide with the
arrival time of the group flight ‐ please check the group flight details 2
weeks before departure. If you do not take this transfer, or miss it, you
must make your own way to the joining point at your own expense.
Kenya straddles the equator so showers can occur at any time of year, however
the wettest period is April and May. Due to the altitude of the Masai Mara
(1550m) the night time temperature is comfortable, cool yet not cold. Daytime
temperatures can get as high as 30ºC but with low humidity. There can be
light rains at the end of the year, but if anything this is a good thing as
it cuts down the dust and brings out the colours. In the wet the roads can
become difficult and a little patience and pushing may be required! Please be
aware that over recent years weather patterns have changed and are now
somewhat unpredictable.

Daypack
Fleece and windbreak for early mornings
Very light wet weather top
Re-usable water bottles
Buff/scarf for dust
Mosquito repellent
Avoid bright colours when on safari.
Rucksack or holdall: please do not bring a suitcase or hard-bottomed bag on
these trips. We advise you to bring a soft holdall/rucksack and a day pack.
Everyone has a large locker (30 inches deep, 19 inches long and 10 inches
high) to store his or her belongings and personal items in. We recommend
you also take a combination padlock to lock the locker. Shoes can be stored
separately at the back of the vehicle.
*Please note:* In a move praised by conservation groups and health
organisations, Kenya has taken the lead in banning the use of plastic carrier
bags and certain other plastic bags. Included in the ban are the following
items that travellers might carry:
▪ Duty free carrier bags
▪ General shopping bags
▪ Bin liners (sometimes used to protect luggage during rain)
▪ Dry cleaning bags (commonly wrapped around clothing)
Travellers arriving into Kenya via airports, sea ports or land borders will
be required to leave any bags deemed to be on the banned list at the point of
entry. Travellers will not be fined so long as they surrender any prohibited
bags.
If you are interested in animal photography then take a camera with a good
optical zoom.
Binoculars
Wet wipes (Biodegradable)
Travel towel
Hand gel wash
Toilet roll
There are a great variety of souvenirs on sale. We encourage buying items
which benefit the local economy and avoiding expensive shopping malls where
most of the money will go abroad or to large businesses.
Bargaining is the norm for much souvenir buying. Don't accept the first price
offered unless the shop or stall clearly works on fixed prices, but also
remember that you are probably much better off than most local people, so
please do not generate ill-feeling by bargaining too hard. Similarly, you
should not bargain for items which you have no intention of buying.
Goods can often be traded with the Masaai rather than money especially red
clothing, cheap watches and sunglasses. Amongst the local handicrafts look
out for Makonde woodcarvings, permitted leather goods, native jewellery,
local textiles, batik and soapstone carvings.

you choose to give is entirely personal, but as a guide we suggest that you
budget (per person):
Approximately US$20-$25 for your tour leader.
Approximately US$10-$15 for each of the other 3 crew members on this trip.
It is also courteous to tip any extra guides/ drivers you may have over the
course of the trip, though certainly not compulsory. Shortly after arrival
the leader will suggest to the group that they donate a sum of approximately
US$ 15 per person towards a kitty. This money is then used for tipping local
guides, hotel porters, drivers etc and will be distributed by the leader. Any
money left at the end of the trip will be refunded to the group on equal
basis.
