Leg 20 will pass under Madagascar and steer a course for the African coast. Nearing the coast of Africa, it will be necessary to keep a careful eye on the prognostic weather charts as the Agulhas current and wind strengths/directions will play a role in the timing of our arrival. Once on the coast of Africa, we’ll have the option of sheltering in the Mozambique Channel while we wait for suitable weather to move south.
Our Cruising Style
Aboard Elcie, we enjoy adventures and we like to have fun. To us, the difference between a charter and an expedition is the participation of all on board in the ship’s routine. Our emphasis is on learning through doing and we encourage everyone on board to take at least a part in sail handling, navigation, steering and planning shore excursions. Most of our past crew/guests have found that by joining in fully, a greater sense of achievement is gained in addition to newfound skills.
As Captain and Mate/Cook, we like to operate in a manner we consider “relaxed professionalism.” We are long time sailors with a strong background in education on larger vessels operating offshore and in remote areas. Therefore, we have a set of standardized rules for the safe operation of the ship. All on board will be instructed in safety procedures and drills will be practiced.
We like to get away from the regular tourist track and to discover the true nature of the ports we visit. To facilitate this, we make ourselves aware of the local customs and language of our host countries. We strive to leave no negative impressions from our stay on the people or the environment. We do our best to turn off the engines and sail whenever we can. To further reduce fuel consumption, a large solar array on top of the deckhouse provides power to our lights, refrigeration and hot water heater.
We welcome individuals, groups and couples and encourage families to join our expeditions. Our own two daughters, ages 14 and 16 will be on board. On an expedition, the girls act as ship’s crew, helping with sail handling and galley duties. At times, they will be busy with schoolwork. When families are aboard, they will be keen to share their sailing experience with other kids. They have sailed with many adults and are aware of an individual’s need for privacy and respect. Smoking is never permitted on board and alcohol is typically only reserved for when we are at anchor. We do have a ship’s cat. Please alert us if you are prone to dander allergies as it is possible to arrange shore leave for the cat on some legs.
