Our trip starts today in Vielha. Vielha itself has a wonderful location nestled amongst the soaring peaks of the Pyrenees. The town can trace its origins all the way back to the Romans, when it was one of the last rebel strongholds to hold out. Today it is a bustling town with a good mix of cafes and restaurants, and retains a strong Catalan identity in its culture and cuisine and provides a perfect base for a family adventure. **
We will take our first walk into this impressive national park. The drive to Pontet de Rius at 1650m, the end of the track and the starting point of our hike, takes approximately 35 minutes. We start walking up to the Restanca lake, following the GR 11, the famous trail that crosses the Pyrenees from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. On the way to the Restanca lake we cross magnificent silver fir, oak, beech and dwarf mountain pine woods. We pass by the Restanca mountain hut and then head to the Mar Lake, at 2245m. The lake is famous for its colour, a green/blue mix, the cause of which is still unknown. This is a fabulous spot for a swim or to relax and admire the stunning peaks that surround the lake: Besiberri Nord, Tuc de Sarrahèra, Tuc der Estanh Redon, Tuc de Conangllos, Tuc des Estanhets, all of them above 2,500m. We have lunch at Estanh de Mar. From there, we descend to Pontet de Rius, the starting point of the hike. We will arrive back at the hotel between 15:00 and 16:00, giving your family the chance to relax around the hotel or explore the village of Vielha before dinner. **
Today we start at the most eastern point of Val d’Aran (Beret), and pass over to the most western point of Pallars Sobirà (Esterri d’Àneu). This trail is 36km long, quite flat and is particularly suited to biking. The trail stays close to the Noguera Pallaresa River, crosses the most important silver fir woods of the Catalan Pyrenees (Bonabé and Marimanya forests) and passes natural springs where we can stop to refill our water bottles. It also passes by pretty small villages with brilliant Romanesque churches (Alòs d’Isil, Isil, Borén, Isavarre) and we will enjoy our packed lunch in one of these. We return by vehicle to Vielha before 16:00. **
Today has been left free to choose from the many activities on offer in Val d’Aran. You may decide to go horse riding, swimming at the local pool, go rafting or visit the thermal baths of Tredos. Or you could simply choose to relax in the jacuzzi and sauna at the hotel or in a café in town. Another possibility would be to visit the charming village of Arties, located a short bus ride away from Vielha. For a cultural experience, you might try and visit one of the many chapels and churches in Vielha, built during the 12th and 13th centuries. **
During the morning, we descend the Bausen Ravine, an exhilarating and continuous flow of water that descends from the Sèrra de Vacanera (on the French border) to the Garona River. All safety equipment is included, such as ropes, belayers, harness and helmet, as well as wetsuit. The descent of the Bausen ravine takes us around 1 hour and 30 minutes and is classed as easy. Canyoning is an activity which involves the use of abseiling, jumping and sliding to get from the top of a canyon to the bottom. We will have lunch in the historic village of Les at a restaurant specialising in Pyrenean cuisine that will provide us with further fuel for an afternoon full of adventure. In the afternoon we will spend approximately 2-3 hours trying zip lining, various other circuit adventures and walking along a 250m long tree top walk way. This is an afternoon that the kids will love and even adults will have the chance to unlock their inner child and have some fun. After a busy action packed day, we return to Vielha. **
Today we will have the opportunity to take a walk in the ancient Carlac forest, located near Bausen, on the border with France. This is a lush forest with a beautiful landscape and home to thousand year old beech trees. During the walk with your tour leader there will be a focus on botany and he will organise an activity for the whole group to participate in. This will be a great activity for the kids as your tour leader will be giving out several clues along the way and will encourage all the family to get involved in identifying all the different trees, shrubs and flowers. There may even be a special prize at the end of the walk for those who successfully identify the most! We will return to the hotel in Vielha around 15:00 where there will then be time to relax at the hotel or in the village before dinner. **
The last day has been left for the ‘the jewel in the crown’ of the Aigüestortes National Park. Circ de Colomers is a huge glacial basin surrounded by peaks of up to 3000m and has 48 lakes. A short drive takes us to Salardu, then by 4WD to Banhs de Tredòs and finally to the start point of our walk, at 1976m. First we climb to this beautiful lake at 2130m, where the Colomers mountain hut was built several years ago. The track crosses magnificent woods of dwarf mountain pines, maples, beeches and silver firs. From the mountain hut we will take a circular walk of 3.8km around 5 lakes (Mort, Garhilhs de Jos, Cabidornats, Long and Redon). There may also be the opportunity (weather dependent) to enjoy a swim at the Long lake. We will then return to the hotel in Viehla for our final evening together. **
The tour ends in Vielha after breakfast.
