A spectacular walking journey through the mountain and coastal wilderness of Greenland’s fjorded east coast.
The group flight arrives in the afternoon, giving you time to relax before a group dinner in one of the many restaurants found in this exciting city. **
We begin with a short morning transfer to Reykjavik domestic airport for our flight to Kulusuk. In the afternoon a short walk into the village will give us a chance to get familiar with the amazing scenery. (2 to 3hrs walking, no elevation gain, 8 km) **
Today we explore further taking a morning helicopter flight to Tasiilaq (10 min). In clear weather we will enjoy outstanding views as we fly over rugged summits and iceberg-studded sea. In the afternoon we hike to the Flower Valley. The Arctic summer is short and hectic making the mountain flora a stunning sight to delight walkers that are lucky enough to be there in June. Please note that on occasion it is not possible to take the helicopter flight. In these cases a boat transfer is used and no refund is offered. It is though unlikely both helicopter flights are unable to run.
Today we will enjoy marvellous panoramic views of impressive high granite peaks that seem to rise straight from the sea creating unending ranges to the north. We will be amazed at the huge numbers of icebergs in the Sermilik Fjord (also known as the ice fjord).
On this beautiful coastal walk we will be heading north to Tasiilaq fjord. The Niviarsiaq, Greenland's national flower also gives a beautiful rich pink colour to the shorelines on the June departure and, in August, we will find lots of wildberries and crowberries. In the afternoon you can opt for an optional boat trip to Hann glacier (subject to weather conditions).
Today’s walk begins on a scenic coastal path and follows the husky trail of ‘Sermilikvejen’ through a beautiful valley. Here we find a group of lakes set among granite peaks topped by small glaciers. We will be circling the heart-shaped mountain Aammangaaq, a truly remote spot.
Depending on our helicopter flight back we walk along the Fjord south of Tasiilaq. This is a perfect opportunity to see the ice in all its shapes and colours and also wildlife such as the arctic fox and, with a bit of luck, bowhead whales can be spotted enjoying the desolate surroundings. We then transfer back to Kulusuk.
Today we climb the summit of Isikajjia, a US built radar station, a 336m summit facing the open sea. It provides a beautiful view over the archipelago dotted with islets and big icebergs that sometimes stretch over 100 metres height floating south.
After a morning at leisure we fly back to Reykjavik and transfer to our hotel to go out for a farewell group dinner. **
Our trip ends in Reykjavik, however you may wish to extend your stay in Iceland's quirky capital or visit the Blue Lagoon (advance booking required.) **
