A visit to legendary Cape Horn is something that only a priveledged few will ever experience. Situated on Hornos Island in Chile's Tierra del Fuego archipelago, the rocky headland is surrounded by wild seas where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet. If weather conditions allow, you will have the opportunity to explore the island before setting sail towards the Falklands. You will have four full days to explore this wildlife-rich archipelago, with it's unpoilt beaches, rugged terrain and farmlands, before flying back to Chile.

Day 1
You will meet at the pier in Ushuaia for an 8 p.m. embarkation. We recommend that you book an additional night in Ushuaia the night before to allow for any flight delays and to allow time to enjoy Ushuaia and nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park. After boarding the ship, set sail along the Beagle Channel towards Puerto Williams, Chile, the southernmost town in the world, where the ship will clear formalities for the approach to Cape Horn.
Day 2
After an overnight crossing of Nassau Bay, you awake in full view of legendary Cape Horn. Weather permitting, you will board a Zodiac and be one of the priveledged few to step foot on this famous and rarely visited island. Sail and explore the area in depth before we set a course north, towards the Falkland Islands.
Day 3
As you sail through the South Atlantic en route to the Falkland Islands, you can enjoy an engaging programme of lectures and presentations. In the company of expert guides, watch for wildlife from the lounge or from the outer decks. Spot magnificent seabirds such as albatross and petrel, as well as different species of whale, all following in our wake.
Day 4
Ruggedly beautiful and remote, places such as New Island, Weddell Island or West Point are located at the extreme west of the Falklands' archipelago. Dramatic cliffs contrast with sheltered sandy bays and natural harbors. They host a large concentration and great diversity of wildlife. Some of the best wildlife experiences are just a short distance from the settlements. The next few days will be spent exploring this magnificent archipelago on land and by Zodiac.
Day 5
Visit Carcass Island. Named after HMS Carcass, which visited in the late 18th century, the terrain is varied with rocky ridges, steep cliffs, open plains, white sand beaches and coves. Saunders is the second largest offshore island and has a varied terrain, from rocky hills to sweeping shorelines. It is an important bird area and has exceptional wildlife. All five breeding species of penguin can be spotted here along with black-browed albatross and many other birds.
Day 6
Cruise down the Falkland Sound and witness its rough and untouched landscapes. We immerse ourselves in the past and recent history of the islands. You will have the opportunity to visit settlements along the way and meet the locals, offering an insight into the local culture of farming families. As we stop at sites that were active battlefields during the 1982 conflict, our historians will enlighten you in the regional geopolitics.
Day 7
Join our expedition team on guided walking tours in the town of Stanley or to Gipsy Cove, or take the option to explore on your own and absorb the local atmosphere. Grab some lunch at the pub, visit the local maritime museum, the church, or walk down Ross Road, paying tribute at the war memorials at the waterfront. Small-group day tours and half-day tours can be purchased on board the ship, such as a visit to Volunteer Point and a 4x4 battlefiels tour.
Day 8
A transfer to the airport at Mount Pleasant will be provided from the ship, depending on your scheduled flight. You will have a choice to return to either Punta Arenas or to Santiago which you will need to confirm on booking.

Weather

The best time to visit is spring (Sept-Nov) and autumn (March- April). Between June and September the heat in the northern part of the country is less intense. Remember rain can fall at any time of the year and the weather is changeable in the mountains. Easter Island has a tropical climate so is likely to be quite hot and humid. It can also rain there in the evenings and become chilly.

Argentina has a climate that ranges from subtropical in the north to cold in the temperate south. The Andes has erratic rainfall and flash floods from December to May. From June to September spring like sunny days temper the cold nights.

Vaccination

Nothing compulsory, we recommend protection against typhoid, tetanus, diphtheria, polio and hepatitis A. Please consult your travel clinic for the latest advice on Malaria, Dengue Fever and Zika Virus. Please take preventative measures to avoid mosquito bites - these include mosquito repellent as well as long trousers and long sleeve shirts to cover up when necessary. Please note many countries in Central America, South America and the Caribbean require a yellow fever vaccination certificates if travelling from infected areas. A detailed list of these countries can be found on the NaTHNaC website - http://travelhealthpro.org.uk/countries. Also on the NaTHNaC site there is a list of Countries (and specific areas within a country) which are at risk of infection and a vaccination is therefore recommended. Please check the latest requirements with your travel clinic or doctor prior to departure. The above is not an exhaustive list.
