Local Impact: How you will help the local community by joining this tour:
Join a local guide for an afternoon of exploring the LGBTQI history of St Kilda, a vibrant area that has always been a place of acceptance, diversity and inclusion in Melbourne. You’ll visit important landmarks and venues significant to the LGBTQI community, learn about the history of the area, and end with a drink in the oldest gay friendly bar in the city.
This tour is priced for a minimum group size of two travellers. A solo traveller may still book this private experience but will be charged the base rate for two travellers.
You tour starts at Luna park where your guide will outline how St Kilda has changed over the years. From there, you’ll head to Veg Out, an organic, chemical free community garden where you’ll see artwork by LGTBQI artists who have lived in St Kilda.
Next, we’ll take a walk along Acland St and stop for a coffee and snack on the way. While in the area, we’ll stop to visit the Great Wall of St Kilda, a large mosaic wall depicting local residents' quotes and portraits, including messages about the AIDS crisis, gay rights, inclusiveness and diversity.
You’ll then stop at Linden Gallery, a Victorian mansion that now houses an LGTBQI+ inclusive community arts centre and gallery. Another important stop on our tour will be the front of the building where Secret Life of Us was filmed, one of the first 'mainstream' Australian TV shows to depict openly gay characters positively.
A walk past Theatre Works is next, a community theatre that hosts many LGTBQI+ events and productions. You’ll then walk along the Rainbow Road, a colourful crossing on Fitzroy St before visiting the new Victorian Pride Centre – the second largest of its kind in the world. Hear about the many businesses that are based here and the amazing work they do for the LGBTQI+ community in Australia.
We’ll then head down Fitzroy St where the Midsumma Parade takes place, part of the three-week LGBTQI+ festival that takes place every summer in the city.
Our tour ends with a drink at the newly renovated Prince Public Bar, the oldest gay friendly bar in Melbourne and in operation since the 1930s. In the 1970s it was home to 'Pennies' Lesbian Disco and 'Pokies,' one of Melbourne’s first above ground drag venues. After your drink, feel free to stick around, or your guide can offer tips on what else to see and do in the area.
