A ten-day safari into Tanzania’s Northern parks of Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire as well as the Rift Valley and Lake Natron, plus a chance to climb the Sacred Mountain of the Masai (OlDoinyoLengai), and experience real Masai culture.  Our safari travels into the best areas of this game-packed region, staying amongst the game with the sounds of the African bush all around as well as visiting some off the beaten track areas of Masai land, where few venture. Lake Natron is often covered with thousands of flamingo.

The Lemosho route, which starts on the western side of the mountain, is the route of choice for those hikers in search of scenic beauty, remoteness and a good chance of reaching the summit due to its high success rate. Lemosho maximizes the chances that a climber will reach the summit, and enjoy their climbing experience overall. It is ideally tackled over seven nights allowing for better altitude acclimatization. Although it is a long drive to the starting point, your rewards are high chances of seeing wildlife on the lower slopes and possibly being the only climbers on this quieter route.

The Londorosi/Shira route is the longest but less crowded route, and covers some of the most fascinating and scenic areas on Kilimanjaro: Shira plateau and Western Breach Wall.

Tanzania National Parks have opened up some great wilderness areas for walking safaris, and we are one of the few operators offering multi-day walking safaris in this spectacular area. We walk in a wilderness area of the Ngorongoro eco-system, with armed National Parks’ guides and our guides, typically without a vehicle in sight!  Our safari travels into the best areas of this region, camping with the sounds of the African bush all around, and getting out on foot for three to five days, IN the Parks/Conservation areas, with a lightweight camping rig and support crew.  Longer & shorter walks on request. We have developed various walks/hikes, each one vastly different to the next in terms of the terrain covered and the type of scenery you will enjoy during your walk.  The full itinerary for the ‘Empakaai-Natron’ itinerary includes a four day walk, but at certain times of year we recommend other routes.

Lose yourself in the incredible beauty of the lush rainforest of the Umbwe route as you make your way towards the Umbwe Caves. Giant tree ferns flourish underneath massive tropical trees covered with Oldman’s Beard (usnea lichen) and pretty flowers including a variety of lilies and hibiscus. Colobus and Blue Monkeys may often be seen jumping between tree branches with an abundance of birdlife in the trees above.  The Umbwe route is a challenging route, though the shortest in distance of the available routes on Kilimanjaro, it is the steepest and ascend is at a rapid rate.  A steep ascent on the first two days lead you up to a picturesque alpine desert where the harsh terrain ensures that only the toughest of plants survive. From here the summit beckons–permanently iced she tempts you to reach the highest point in Africa–Uhuru peak. A magnificent feeling.  Continue the hike on the southern slopes of the mountain admiring giant glaciers on the higher peaks along the way. Great photo opportunities unfold with red sunlight playing on the cliffs and ice fields visible from the camp at dusk and dawn. Hikers can expect to wake up above the clouds on the fourth day on the mountain with breath-taking views into the distance below.  Further along the trail it leads you up and down the rocky path to the base camp before heading for the summit. There are stunning views of Mwenzi Peak and Kibo’s glaciers. A long early morning hike in pitch darkness takes you to the crater rim with most hikers arriving just before dawn. Uhuru Peak (19,340ft/5895 m), the highest point in Africa and the summit of the worlds’ highest free standing mountain is now tantalizingly close, just a few hundred metres away! A soft red-yellow glow on the horizon greets you en-route to the summit–as you experience a once in a life time sunrise over Africa!  After all the excitement of the summit the trail leads you back down the dusty path past the base camp towards Mweka Camp, where you spend your last night on the mountain. Interesting mountain vegetation to look out for around the lower foothills include Proteas (Protea kilimandscharica), Impatiens (impatiens kilimanjari), daisies (euryops brownie). The last day is a short walk through montane forest to Mweka Gate from where you will be taken to the Keys Hotel, for your last night in Moshi and with plenty to celebrate!

This climbing safari avoids the crowded Marangu Route on Kilimanjaro, preferring to approach the mountain from the north by the lightlyused Rongai route. Experienced guides consider this ascent route both the easier and more beautiful than the main Marangu trail. The Rongai route begins in delightful forest, with the possibility of wildlife viewing, and each day of walking progresses through a different climate zone, adding considerably to the interest of the trek.

Kilimanjaro is shy. Although she towers at 5 895 m above sea level, she is something of a reluctant muse, more often than not concealing her lofty splendour behind a cloudy veil. On the Rongai route you get to view her from almost all angles but her western slopes. The journey by road on the morning of the start of your trek takes you from the bustling little town of Moshi all around the eastern side of Kilimanjaro to the village of Nale Moru in the north. This is an interesting ride itself through coffee and banana plantations as well as villages that do not often see visitors. You get a taste for what everyday life is all about at the foot of Africa’s leading lady, Mt Kilimanjaro. Children play in the streets, farmers and traders are selling their goods at markets dotting the dusty streets while goats and cattle try and hide from the sun in the shade. From time to time you catch yourself marvelling at the giant mountain that you are about to take on–from classic Mwanzi Peak views to glimpses of Kibo. As you set off on this epic journey, the path leads you through plantations before entering the lush rainforest on the lower slopes of the mountain. Along the way giant tree ferns flourish underneath trees draped with Oldman’s Beard (usnea lichen) and colourful flowers including a variety of lilies and hibiscus. Blue Monkeys and Colobus Monkeys may curiously peak at you from the green trees while birds sing happily. Leaving the montane forest behind, you make your way higher on the northern foothills on day two. Hiking through the moorland you enjoy superb views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields of the crater rim. On day three the views start to open up allowing you incredible sightings to Kenya in the north and up towards Kibo to the south. You gain height hiking towards Mawenzi Peak which is peering down on you from 5,149 m (16,893 ft). Spend a night under the towering spires of Mawenzi before making your way over the mountain’s saddle to base camp. The semi-desert terrain makes place for a picturesque alpine desert where the harsh terrain gives only the hardiest of plant species permission to grow. From here the icy summit calls you to the highest point in Africa–Uhuru peak. It is a feeling of accomplishment like none other. In the early morning darkness you trek to the crater, normally arriving just before sunrise. Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft /5 895 m), the highest point in Africa and the summit of the world’s highest free standing mountain, is now within reach. The soft morning sun breaks through and lights up your path en-route to the summit–as you enjoy the sunrise from the Roof of Africa!  After all the excitement of the summit the trail leads you back down the dusty path past the base camp towards Horombo Hut, where you spend your last night on the mountain. On the lower foothills Proteas (Protea kilimandscharica),Impatiens (impatiens kilimanjari),daisies (euryops brownie) as well as huge senecio plants and the shorter lobelia plants hug the path as you walk your last few kilometres to Marangu Gate. You leave the rainforest and its welcome shade behind to board the vehicle to the Keys Hotel, for your last night in Moshi and plenty to celebrate!
